Happy Father's Day 2010

It’s Father’s Day again. A commercially driven holiday manufactured to create commerce opportunities or a well deserved day of thanks and praise for everything a Dad contributes to his family throughout the year? As a Dad celebrating Father’s day for the fourth time, I’d have to lean towards the latter. I can attest to the crowds at dining establishments, movie theaters, parks and other recreational facilities. It’s family based insanity times 300 million. Yet despite the inherent chaos manifested from a celebration of this scope, the general mood of the holiday helps transcend the pettiness and brings forth a sense of joy. Children, in no small part due the behest of their mothers, rise to the occasion to elevate the status of Dad to king for a day. So I’d like to thank my family and all families who celebrate Father’s day.

We strive together through this personal journey of ours. Taking the time to recognize a member of the family acknowledges that special bond we all share. Happy Fathers Day everyone! Please let us know how your father’s day went. If you have a story to share, leave a comment below.

  • A little late to comment on this post, but my favorite way to celebrate Fathers Day with my 5 kids is with a BBQ and hand-made cards. I still make my Dad’s card by hand (he’s 80 this year). But, I gave it a little high tech twist this year by making it into a video of me making the card set to one of my son’s piano recitals. You can see an excerpt (stripped out some of the more personal aspects) here:
