Avengers Sequel Misses Mark

Avengers Age of Ultron
To be fair, attempting to top the original “Avengers” movie would require beating the odds. Most sequels fall short of the original story. Of course there are a few exceptions to the rule but realistically, the majority of filmmakers hope to achieve parity with the original source material. Director Joss Whedon was tapped again by Marvel Studios to capture lightning in a bottle. What he delivered for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was more of a montage of fantastic action sequences. Perhaps a necessary evil in a sequel possessing a script that lacked the heart and palpable exuberance of the first film.

How’s the Story?

As mentioned previously, the story felt thinly connected. Perhaps by design, it just lent itself to elaborate action sequences. There were a few unexpected and in my opinion, unnecessary subplots thrown into the mix. For example, an awkward love story that puzzled most audience members. More so than the first Avengers, this second outing was built to move the predetermined story arc along as per the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline. Although physically imposing, Ultron seemed more of a B-list movie villain for the “Avengers”. As an audience member, I never doubted the Avengers would prevail which effectively diminished the thrill in what should have been a spectacular thrill ride. It all felt too safe for an action film.

How are the Special Effects?

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” overflows with action sequences. Standouts include a battle between the Iron Man Hulk Buster and the Hulk. Ultron looks fantastic despite being a CGI based character. Mark Ruffalo’s facial expressions have been captured perfectly for the Hulk.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is rated PG-13. Can you take the younger kids to see it?

For the most part, the action is typical superhero level violence. Relatively bloodless and gore free save for one quick scene with a dismemberment. The action can be intense at times but more so in the duration. I’d recommend kids 7 and up based on their experience with superhero animated movies and TV shows. Also, there’s some explicit language but nothing too harsh.

Any opportunity for a bathroom break during the movie?

As stated before, the movie’s action packed. Yet the scene when they arrive at the farmhouse might be ideal.

Overall Rating: B

Recommended for kids ages 7 and up.

Pros: Action packed, Introduction of new characters

Cons: Story is disjointed. Lacks heart of the original.
