I’ve received several Public Relations invitations to media events over the years. Quite frankly, they almost never live up to the hype. But every once in awhile, you luck into something special. Yesterday I had the opportunity to hang out with the caped crusader himself, the classic TV series Batman, in New York City’s Times Square at Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Odditorium. Did I mention he drove up in the Batmobile?!! He was there to unveil Mezco Toyz new Batman Mez-itz line from the 1966-68 “Batman” TV series.
Crowds swarmed to get a closer look at Batman (who might secretly be professional Batman Bob DeSimone), the Batmobile and of course the cool new toys. It’s interesting to note how this version of Batman will induce smiles in even the most jaded New Yorker. Unlike the modern version of Batman depicted in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the classic TV series hero evokes nostalgia. As one passerby interjected, “that’s the old school Batman. He’s the good one!” What I think he meant was this Batman represents family, an iconic symbol of childhood, and an ambassador of good will. Mezco Toyz made a wise choice to reconnect fans with an “old chum”.
