It’s not a stretch of the imagination to guess you’ve likely been exposed to the addictive game play of Rovio’s Angry Birds. Then along came the wildly successful follow up game, Angry Birds Star Wars, which attracted a whole new wave of fans captivated by the brilliant pop culture mashup. Now in the game’s sequel, Angry Birds Star Wars II, a real world interactive element has been introduced. Enter Hasbro’s Angry Birds Star Wars Telepods.
What are Telepods about?
Telepods are a new type of toy from Hasbro which offers two modes of game play. The first mode allows you to stack, launch, and crash the Angry Birds Star Wars action figures. In the review set I was sent, Death Star Trench Run, Luke Skywalker Bird can be launched from his X-Wing Starfighter in order to destroy the stacked up Death Star Trench Run blocks. The send mode allows a player to integrate the action figures into the Angry Birds Star Wars II app by way of the included telepods base. If you’re playing a level in the app and you wanted to replace a character (i.e. Jar Jar Binks Bird) in the game, you’d press the telepods button on the app screen, attached the action figure(i.e. Mace Windu Bird) to the telopods base, then place the telepod over the front facing camera and the action figure would teleport to the game and replace the original character.
Using an iPad for this review, my unofficial game testers aka my kids easily picked up on the intuitive controls of the Angry Birds Star WArs II app. They delighted in the standalone game play of stacking up and knocking down the blocks as well as experiencing the cool effect of teleporting their favorite Angry Birds Star Wars action figures in into the app. And yes, you can buy Angry Birds Star Wars action figures separately to build your collection.
Recommended for kids 5 and up.
