I walked into the movie theater expecting to be entertained by a new superhero story, Incredibles 2. After all, the hugely successful original movie, The Incredibles, presented a perfect blend of heartfelt storytelling, visually stunning animation, and delightful superhero adventure. Still, 14 years have passed since it was released in November 2004. During that time I was a single man about to be wed to my high school sweetheart. Flash forward to the present, I’m married and a father keenly attuned to family life. What’s the bottom line? Disney’s Incredibles 2 delivers all the innovative thrills of the original while exploring the nuances of modern fatherhood.
How’s the Incredibles 2 Story?
I’d strongly encourage watching the original movie prior to viewing the sequel. Incredibles 2 simply won’t resonate for viewers without prior knowledge of the characters and their respective backstories. In the sequel, the story seamlessly picks up exactly where the original left off. Wonderful action sequences, timely comedic touches, and snappy dialogue propel the story forward. Elastigirl’s superhero prowess gets fleshed out while Mr. Incredible finds a way to still be super in the role of stay-at-home-Dad. When I first saw the trailer for the movie, I feared yet another misguided representation of fatherhood based on the bumbling stereotypes of the “Mr. Mom” era. I’m elated to report the writers opted for a comedic yet nuanced approach that’s true to the character as well as a positive nod to Dads. The one sub par aspect of the movie is the relatively weak antagonist. It never rises to a level of importance other than a device to move the story along.
How are the special effects?
Incredibles 2 builds upon the already stunning visual mastery of the first movie. The city based action sequences featuring Elastigirl are fun-inspired kinetic artistry. Baby Jack Jack developing superpowers serve up bold crowd-pleasing anarchy. You can’t go wrong with a raccoon thrown into the mix.
Any opportunity for Bathroom Breaks?
The fast-paced move offers few lulls. Yet if nature does call, I’d recommend stepping out when the Mr. Incredible and the kids go to a restaurant.
Overall Grade: A-
Rated PG. Great family movie for kids 7 and up.
Pros: A phenomenal sequel that leaves you wanting more. Fantastic action sequences. Edna Marie, of course.
Cons: Movie doesn’t work as a standalone story. You need to watch the original to appreciate the sequel.
