The Flu season and Avengers: Endgame

It’s 2019 and another flu season has hit home. Once more I find myself fortunate enough to be spared the dismal experience. Like clockwork, I’ve taken a flu vaccine shot every year. Yet I’ve not been able to convince my wife and kids to do the same. Our progeny crow the standard “I hate shots!” argument while my wife typically questions the effectiveness of the vaccine. The result? My beloved and bundles of joy catch the flu every year, almost at the same time, while I’m left to dutifully manage their recovery. Still, this year might be different.

In a fortunate stroke of serendipity, the latest “Avengers: Endgame” trailer debuted during the Big Game.

The prominent message of the video was uttered by Captain America himself. “Some people move on, but not us.” Despite the insurmountable odds, Cap was fiercely determined to battle for what was right. Accepting the status quo was not an option. It struck a chord within me.

Emboldened by the first Avenger, I breached the subject of flu vaccines with my kids in dramatic fashion. I waxed poetic with science, delighted them with visual role play (think offering a flu vaccine in Tony Soprano style “I’m gonna make an offer you can’t refuse.”), and implored them to be their own health advocates.

I’m pleased to report half of my children will be voluntarily obtaining a flu shot next season. My wife and youngest child remain steadfast in their resistance but now show signs of cracking. When it comes to illness prevention, other people move on, not us. Thanks Cap.
