Maleficent: Mistress of Evil or Battling Mother-in-Laws

Maleficent has been a top ten villain in Disney Animation lore. Yet in 2014, the live action film division of Walt Disney Studios opted to reinvent the character. Angelina Jolie was cast in the lead role. In this new iteration of the story, the historically evil Maleficent found redemption through the power of motherly love. The movie received mixed reviews yet audiences embraced the story resulting in a box office success.

How’s the story?

In the 2019 sequel, the power of love is also a central theme. Disney’s official press release states that “The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy Maleficent and the soon to be Queen Aurora as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.” Yet there’s also a devilishly delightful element of battling mother-in-laws. The cunning and wicked Queen Ingrith, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, is a worthy adversary to Maleficent. As a lifelong fan of the normally beloved Ms. Pfeiffer, I can attest her portrayal evokes a genuine loathing from the viewing audience.

How are the special effects?

The battle sequences are on par with sequences of the HBO series “Game of Thrones.” Although not nearly as violent, the pacing and movement never fail to excite the senses. Whimsical interactions between supernatural creatures and humans are seamless rather than disruptive to the story. Angelina Jolie looks hauntingly beautiful as the dark fairy.

The movie has a PG rating. Can I take my kids?

The action sequences can be intense. Threats to the existence of the fairies including cruelty certainly stir up emotions. Although not gory, weaponry is used throughout and battle sequences depict violence. Battle scars are shown. The rating is PG but it’s on the cusp of being PG-13. I recommend kids ages 10 and up who’ve experienced super hero type genre movies (Avengers, etc.)

Are there any ideal moments for Bathroom Breaks?

There are few lulls in the movie. Yet if one has to answer the call of nature, I’d suggest to head for relief after the wedding proposal. Your second best bet would be the sequence when Maleficent is whisked away to an island of dark fairies.

Final Thoughts

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil builds upon the original by including an unlikely adversary in the thoroughly convincing performance by Michelle Pfeiffer. Angelina Jolie embodies Maleficent in all her dark supernatural majesty. There are enough surprises to keep the story fresh and the audience enthralled. It’s a solid popcorn movie.

Overall Grade: B+

Recommended for kids ages 10 and up.

Pros: Angelina Jolie captivates as Maleficent. You love to hate the cunning Queen Ingrith played convincingly by Michelle Pfeiffer.

Cons: The dark fairy backstory drags a bit.
