Batman: Caped Crusader, a new animated series, was recently revealed during the 2021 DC FanDome event. The original Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm will be returning to develop Batman: Caped Crusader for HBO Max and Cartoon Network. Batman: Caped Crusader is a reimagining of the Dark Knight that takes cues from the very earliest incarnation of the character.
Co-created and executive produced by The Batman movie’s director Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams, Batman: Caped Crusader is a reimagining of the Dark Knight that looks to lean into the very earliest incarnation of the character. According to Bruce Timm:
More Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series. My idea is basically, it’s 1990 again and I get to do what I want to do this time. It gives us the opportunity to say, ‘Okay, the versions of Joker and Catwoman and Penguin, those versions we did on BTAS were really great and iconic but there’s lots of different ways we can take those characters that we hope will be just as iconic and just as powerful.
The creative team emphasized that Batman is very much alone. There are no other heroes or allies, his relationship with Commissioner Gordon has not been established. He even lacks the hi-tech gadgetry. However, as the show progresses, he’ll begin to develop them including an evolving Batmobile. His initial overall look, such as his cowl that feature genuinely bat-authentic ears, point to the origin of the character’s design.
According to the three co-executive producers:
We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.
Batman: Caped Crusader will premiere on HBO Max and Cartoon Network sometime in 2022.
