The Marvels is a better movie than you’ve been told

The opening weekend of The Marvels was mediocre at best for a Marvel Studios release. Media outlets had set up the film for box office failure with numerous articles about “superhero movies fatigue.” Admittedly, I was reluctant to head to a movie theater and plunk down $15 with such predetermined low expectations. But I had three hours free, an excellent movie theater close by, and my choice of seating at my desired viewing time.

How’s the story?

In a word, entertaining. In fact, it may well have been one of the best MCU films released in the last 2 years. Given the downward spiral in quality found in such clunkers as Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and even Black Panther 2, it’s understandable how the perception of “superhero movie fatigue” gained traction. I believe the true reason was that Marvel Studios simply lost its way. The Marvels marks a return to the formula that endeared generations of fans: a solid comic book style story, zaniness, poignant character development, and purpose.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, in her duties investigating a wormhole, finds her powers entangled with Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. The trio form an alliance of necessity to fix the problem which includes taking down the main villain. Through the course of the story, Carol examines her past personal choices, Monica heals old wounds, and Ms. Marvel matures. Indeed, it’s the relationship between these three that keeps you invested.

How are the special effects?

You know the narrative is solid when the special effects don’t pull you out of the story. The visual wizardry was masterful and seamless. The flying sequences were thrilling and the fight choreography was adrenaline-filled fun.

The movie is rated PG-13. Can I take my kids?

One can expect the same levels of action and violence as other MCU movies. It should be noted there are difficult choices presented about death. The PG-13 rating is on target.

Are there any ideal moments for Bathroom Breaks?

The movie has a relatively tight runtime of about 1 hour and 45 minutes. In fact it now holds the record for the shortest MCU film. But if you must answer nature’s call, make the move when The Marvels visit the water planet.

Final thoughts

I can’t emphasize how rewarding it was to view a return to the entertaining ways of the MCU. The Marvels certainly isn’t the best of Marvel Studios but it’s a solid entry that puts it in the middle of the pack. The rewatch factor will be high.

Overall Grade: B+

Recommended for ages 13 and up.

Pros: Iman Vellani continues to shine as Ms. Marvel. Brie Larson gets a chance to flesh out Carol Danvers which was lacking in the first movie. Teyonah Parris comes into her own as Monica Rambeau.

Cons: The script was a bit choppy at times. But not so much so that it distracted from the overall enjoyment of The Marvels’ adventures.
