The 2024 Holiday season has officially come to a close. Presents have been unwrapped, food consumed, and a begrudging return to work has begun. Dare I say, a collective gloominess has descended across the land. But don’t despair. A brand new year also means ushering in new tech gear. Here’s our short list of what we’re looking forward to in 2025.
One can’t address tech gear without acknowledging the elephant in the room, namely, the Apple iPhone. Although there are numerous choices in the smartphone category, pop culture has chosen the iconic iPhone as its trendsetter. Rumor has it that Apple CEO Tim Cook’s crew have been readying the next redesigned iPhone SE for release in 2025. The entry level model for the line will lose the home button and gain a full edge-to-edge screen. Face recognition will be the norm. Both the back and front facing cameras will receive a specifications bump. You can also expect an upgrade to the latest apple processor to accommodate Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system that uses AI which Apple claims “harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks while taking an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI.”
As for the inevitable Apple 17 and 17 Pro? Expect slimmer models with Apple including its own proprietary modem in the redesigned models.
Nintendo will finally release the next-generation of its highly anticipated game console, the Nintendo Switch 2. Expect better graphics and more responsive hardware. Not too much else is known currently about the redesign. Yet you can expect Nintendo to delay releasing new titles in popular game franchises (i.e. Mario Kart 9) until after the launch.
In the area of artificial intelligence, both Apple and Amazon are expected to release enhanced, AI-laden versions of their respective digital assistants. Apple announced several changes to Siri were on the way for Spring 2025, including voice control of apps and utilizing personal data to better answer queries. According to Bloomberg reporting, Apple is also planning to preview its 2026 version of Siri which will be a more conversational Siri based on an advanced AI.
Amazon’s Alexa assistant, a forerunner in the digital assistant space, is evolving as an AI helper capable of generating answers to broader scope of topics and fulfilling daily tasks such as ordering food from a local restaurant. The new version should arrive sometime in 2025.
Lastly, I’d be remiss not to mention the return of the Honda Prelude in late 2025 as a 2026 year model. Honda discontinued the venerable Prelude in 2001. In essence, it’s reintroducing the vehicle to a whole new generation. A pitched roofline and two-door design give the new Prelude a look reminiscent to the Nissan Z. According to Honda, the new Prelude will have a dual-motor hybrid powertrain as well as simulated shifts that emulate a traditional automatic transmission.
That’s our shortlist of highly anticipated tech gear. As of this writing, the year has just begun. We can’t wait to see what else might be revealed. What’s on your list?
