David Harbour is an actor best known for his role as Chief Hopper in the Netflix series Stranger Things. Joaquin Phoenix’s multilayered performance in the movie Joker garnered critical praise. Oscar the Grouch is internationally revered for his cantankerous ways on the beloved children’s series, Sesame Street. NBC’s long running satire show, Saturday Night Live, has inexplicably managed to combine all of the above.
Grouch (Joker Parody) – SNL
Despite the movie trailer being a parody of the Joker movie, countless fans would be willing to hand over their money to view this gritty version of Sesame Street. As a narrative piece, the characters involved translate almost seamlessly. There’s something to be said about changing the paradigm to produce new ideas. The fine line between comedy and tragedy is razor thin. In fact, in many cases, that line is blurred.
One has to wonder how long it will be before other children’s beloved programs such as Barney, Blue’s Clues and even Mister Rogers will be given the green light to receive a dark comedic treatment. As kids grow into adults, so too does their need to be entertained by the familiar albeit in an updated version reflecting their current situation in modern society. Tapping into a shared childhood generational experience coupled with adult sensibilities fits the bill. It’s not surprising that Grouch has struck a nerve.
