Human Resource – Short Film Review

human resource short film
Human Resource, a recent Best horror short film winner at the Fall 2025 Poconos Horror Fest, is a movie that holds a dark mirror to one of humanity’s most unsettling modern dilemmas. Director Henry Chaisson “explores the quiet fear of being replaced and of losing connection with what makes us human.”

How’s the story?

The story opens up revealing a young woman named Shae (Mia Vallet), head of Human Resources at start-up company called Hume, awakening in a meditation room located in her company’s office. She’s clandestinely transformed the space into her bedroom. Through a VoiceOver, she gives us insight into her career outlook… “I don’t think of it as a job, I think of it as a calling.”

Later, as Shae prepares a presentation in a conference room, she encounters Rahm (Prashanth Kamalakanthan), Hume’s CEO, in a state of distress underneath the conference table. In a frantic outburst, he reveals the company’s dismal financial plight. He states Tall Capital is selling the company and they are sending over “Ellsie” to do the dirty work.

Shae soon encounters “Ellsie” (Veanne Cox). Ellsie tells Shae that she and her fellow workers can “all win if they generate value.” The narrative dramatically unfolds. The tension builds like a tightly coiled spring.

Final Thoughts

Veanne Cox as Ellsie

Set within the corporate world, survival is the unspoken mandate. How much of our humanity can we afford to keep? Human Resource is a psychological sci-fi thriller willing to explore that question. Mia Vallet as Shae embodies the relatable every person seeking a better life as well as validation of one’s own worth. Veanne Cox’s performance as “Ellsie” exudes a stoic persona that is something chillingly other. Director Henry Chaisson captivates the viewer by shedding light on the desperate struggle found in this cold, unforgiving environment.
