Paul Rudd gives big performance in Marvel’s Ant-Man

Ant-Man
Admittedly I knew very little about Marvel’s comic book hero Ant-Man. But I’d been following Paul Rudd’s career for years. He’s the type of actor who seems like a great guy in real life which comes across on screen in nearly every performance he’s given to date. I believe his innate charisma, much like Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Chris Pratt (Peter Quill aka Star-Lord), was a factor in Mr. Rudd being cast for the lead role. Still, star power comprises only one piece of the puzzle needed to create a successful action blockbuster. Story matters above all. Ant-Man, the tiniest of Marvel’s superheroes, packs the biggest heart.

How’s the story?

Possibly the most fun one could experience watching a Marvel Studio movie production since Guardians of the Galaxy. Noteworthy, because like Ant-Man, relatively few folks had prior knowledge of the characters in the story. In fact, I’d wager most had no idea what to expect even after viewing the movie trailers. Indeed, Ant-Man plays more like a comedy heist movie than a typical superhero tale. Add in poignant father-daughter relationships and you have the makings of an unexpectedly heartfelt experience.

How are the special effects?

True to recent Marvel Studio movie standards, the special effects are outstanding. What’s truly commendable is the seamless integration of special effects into the storyline. Too often movie studios will lean on the use of special effects to fill in the gaps of a weak story. From a technical standpoint, Ant-Man represents the harmonious meeting of art and design.

Ant-Man is rated PG-13. Can younger kids see this movie?

Unlike Avengers: Age of Ultron, there’s less intensity in the violence short of unfortunate victims being shrunk and turned into into goo. Most of the violence has a comedic element to it. The use of expletives makes it into the movie as well but sparingly so. Overall, I’d recommend the movie for ages 9 and up.

Any ideal moments to take a bathroom break during the movie?

The first half of the movie deals with exposition. If you’re efficient with nature’s calling, you won’t miss much. The latter half of the movie has a faster pace.

Over Rating: A-

Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Pros: Paul Rudd’s performance, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Fun special effects, Engaging cast and story, Rooting for Ants!

Cons: Avenger scene seemed forced.
