How could it be nearly 20 years since the original Independence Day movie hit the big screens? It was the epitome of a summer blockbuster popcorn movie—the kind of film you attended for the fun factor rather then artistic merit. And the world collectively loved it as seen by the impressive box office numbers. In 2016, we’ll get to find out what happens next in 20th Century FOX’s Independence Day: Resurgence.
In the original, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum were cast as hot shot air force pilot Captain Steven Hiller and outsider scientist David Levinson respectively. They were an unlikely duo who’s combined talents made for a stellar team. And who could forget the resonating inspirational speech given by Bill Pullman gave as President Thomas J. Whitmore. Together, the heroes collectively saved the world against impossible odds.
For Independence Day: Resurgence, it seems the majority of the original cast is back except for the glaring absence of Will Smith. Perhaps the script didn’t suit him or maybe his price tag was too high given his current status as a bonafide Hollywood A-lister. Who knows? Still, if the trailer below is any indication, the sequel looks promising even without big Will.
