Family Affair known as Avengers: Endgame

Chris Evans
Avengers: Endgame opened in theaters across the world. Does it live up to the hype? I’ve seen it and I believe even the most fickle fans will enjoy this movie. But what struck an emotional chord for this viewer aside from the astounding visual theatrics were the personal stories. The ties that bind us all together remain deeply rooted in the idea of family.

Throughout the over 20 movies which bridged the path to Avengers: Endgame, fans reveled in stories of heroism, tragedy, and humanity. Credit goes to the writers for never forgetting the small moments. They comprised the glue connecting disparate lives much like melted butter coats otherwise independent kernels of over-sized buckets of popcorn. Popcorn assemble!

Sharing the journey of each of these characters revealed the strength found in family. During the time period of the Marvel Cinema Universe’s existence, I became a father. My worldview changed. Witnessing the story arc of Tony Stark from self-indulgence to father figure resonated profoundly. Indeed, becoming more than the trappings of one’s super powers meant personal growth. As Captain America might say, “no one gets left behind.”

How’s the Avengers: Endgame Story?
Rather than provide details and potential spoilers I’ll just say that movie is more thoughtful than anticipated and provides visual thrills on a grand scale. Expect to re-watch the movies numerous times.

How are the special effects?
As previously mentioned, the visual wizardry meets or exceeds Marvel’s previous efforts. It all blends seamlessly with the story without ever feeling forced.

Can my kids see this movie?
Marvel Studios threads the needle when it comes to on-screen violence. It’s never particularly gory and never rises above typical super hero fare. In short, I’d say kids 9 and up will be fine. Your mileage may vary of course.

Any recommendations for bathroom breaks?
Given that it’s a 3 hour movie, you may need to plan ahead in respect to liquid consumption. But if you must go, then I’d point to the scene when a few members of the team reunites with Thor on Earth.

Overall Grade: A-

Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Pros: Fans will be longing for more. A lot of get up and cheer moments.
Cons: The story does have some some lulls with a few hit and miss sight gags and jokes. There are a few loose ends which never get answered.
