Batman: Caped Crusader has been added to the list of high-profile projects killed off by HBO Max. Remember the villain Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Perhaps David Zaslav, Chief Executive Officer and President of Warner Bros. Discovery, holds the same loathing for all things animated.
The expanding list of projects awaiting the chopping block include Merry Little Batman, The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical, Did Do Do That To The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and The Amazing World Of Gumball: The Movie.
The new animated Batman series was being developed as a kindred successor to Batman: TAS. The production team of Batman:Caped Crusader includes Producers J.J. Abrams, The Batman director Matt Reeves, and Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm. Think of it as a potentially grown up version of the 1990s series.
But there is hope! According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit:
BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER animated series: The show is not cancelled, per sources, just not going to stream on HBO Max. The show is deep in production, nothing is paused. It will show up somewhere.

Even if true, one can’t help feeling puzzled that a high-profile Batman series will end up elsewhere instead of the streaming service that actually owns rights to the character. The new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO seems more focused on cost cutting to appease Wall Street instead of providing quality creative content to Warner Bros.legion of pop culture fans. Will short term accounting gains translate into a shrinking subscriber base for HBO Max? To be continued.
