Werewolf by Night is a love letter to classic horror films

Werewolf by Night debuted on Disney Plus as a special presentation by Marvel Studios. Sourced from Marvel comics, this film marks the introduction of horror into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). From beginning to end, the movie pays tribute to the old Universal Studios horror films from the 1930s. Director Michael Giacchino deftly set the tone with practical effects, black-and-white cinematography, and a haunting score.

How’s the story?
werewolf by night Laura DonnellyFollowing the death of their leader, Ulysses Bloodstone, a group of monster hunters, including Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), were summoned by Ulysses’ widow, Verussa, to Bloodstone Manor. They were to participate in a hunt to determine their new leader, with the winner obtaining the powerful Bloodstone relic. Ulysses’ estranged daughter Elsa (Laura Donnelly) unexpectedly arrived to compete for the Bloodstone, despite Verussa warning her against doing so. The hunt was set in a maze on the grounds featuring a captured monster that had been implanted with the Bloodstone as the hunters’ prize. Initially all of the hunters were out for themselves. Yet an unexpected makeshift alliance was struck between two of the hunters. I won’t delve to much more into the story as to avoid any spoilers. But it’s safe to say we get introduced to the werewolf as well as another monster based on the unfolding circumstances.

The story’s pacing moved along at a breakneck speed without any wasted screen time due to the tight script from screenwriters Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. Audiences will find themselves engaged with the brilliant practical effects including the creative use of light and shadow. Although the run time was relatively short, the main characters were quickly established and felt fully developed. Credit goes to the standout performances of actors such as Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly as well as the playful direction of Michael Giacchino.

How are the special effects?
As mentioned previously, the movie pays tribute to the early Universal Studios horror films from the 1930s in terms of its look and feel. Modern special effects seamlessly contribute to the film as well. For example, the hunted monster’s appearance only enhances rather than detracts from the narrative.

The film is rated TV-14. Can my kids watch this?
The rating accurately reflects the subject matter, namely–horror, fantasy, and super hero violence. Still, I must emphasize that the level of violence and gore was the most visually intense of anything produced to date from the Marvel Cinema Universe. Given these two factors, I would recommend closely following the TV-14 rating.

Final Thoughts
Audiences now have an idea of how Marvel Studios will handle stories dealing with the supernatural. The hype for Blade (2024) will only grow in anticipation. The possibilities will be endless considering the multiverse unleashing unexpected interactions of heroes and villains alike. Werewolf by Night inspires confidence that Marvel not only respects the horror genre, but is eager to break new ground.

Overall Grade: A-

Pros: Wonderful cast. Embraces the past while hinting at the future.

Cons: Some of the hunters were underutilized.
