From the opening scene of The Burden of Nine Lives, writer and director Vega Montanez aims to craft a gritty New York City story about crime, family and revenge. Much like Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, audiences will find themselves immersed in a world filled with characters striving to survive the impossible odds of a struggle-filled existence.
How’s the story?
Throughout New York City’s history, assorted ethnic groups have clawed their way into relevance. More times than not, crime has been a means to achieve upward mobility. Set in the Bronx, Vega Montanez focuses on the these harsh realities from the point of view of one man, Jimmy Diaz (Steven Staine Fernandez), a low level thief trying to do right by his family. After taking part in a successful robbery, the plan to sell the stolen goods goes horribly wrong resulting in the murder of his two cousins. Jimmy somehow survives, awakens in a hospital, and eventually plots his revenge. A tension-filled fury unfolds throughout the rest of the film including a budding love story. There’s a distinct energy fueled by the busy streets and pulsating music. Indoor scenes are darkly lit and exterior shots are often gray. Practical effects are minimally used in a largely narrative driven story. Cinematographer J. Cameron Davenport captured images that evoke a visceral response.
How are the performances?
In the title role of Jimmy Diaz, Steven Staine Fernandez sustained a measured quiet intensity throughout the story. Alysha Wright was a pillar of strength as Dr. Francis and commanded every scene she was in. Also noteworthy, Hilary Ervin gave a deeply poignant performance as Aunt Griselda. The main antagonist, Gabriel (Rico Hundo), had a charismatic presence. Jacob Rojas made an impact playing the role of Jimmy’s cousin, Curtis. He possesses tremendous potential. Overall, the cast exuded an abundance of raw talent.
Final Thoughts
Director/Writer Vega Montanez challenges audiences to experience the ebb and flow of life in a decidedly Bronx tale. Although law enforcement plays a part in the narrative, it’s mostly the laws of the street which dictate the true outcome of one’s daily existence. I think audiences would welcome exploring more of this world. Perhaps a spinoff series could be created, similar to how the critically acclaimed The Penguin episodic spawned from Matt Reeves The Batman. Time will tell. In the meantime, I recommend checking out The Burden of Nine Lives.
