Walter Wuz Here, the Best Horror Short Film winner at the 2026 Poconos Horror Fest, is an original story that leans into the trauma of childhood. Director/Writer Ben Duff gives credence to the potential for terror participating in the most seemingly innocent elementary school activity.
How’s the story?
The production synopsis:
One late summer evening, four twenty-somethings break into an abandoned elementary school. Jake and Jenn are there to reminisce with their estranged friend Zeke, who is visiting town with his new girlfriend Alex. The mood darkens as Alex learns that the three childhood friends are haunted by the bizarre disappearance of their third-grade classmate twenty years ago. Zeke has tried to forget this traumatic event, but Jake and Jenn are obsessed with deciphering the uncanny mystery. The four descend into the bowels of the old school, where they attempt to summon their long lost friend by recreating the strange circumstances of his vanishing.
The story opens in the abandoned school where the backstory of Walter’s disappearance is disclosed. The tension quickly rises for the newcomer, Alex, as well as Zeke who’s forced to confront a suppressed memory. Once the group moves to the school gym, Jake and Jenn unbox the rainbow parachute which they reveal to be the key for their plan to summon their last friend. Zeke agrees to the idea while Alex, clearly troubled and confused by the premise, reluctantly goes along.
When the group takes hold of the parachute, they move the fabric in a rhythmic up and down pattern. Once it becomes Zeke and Alex’s turn to go under the parachute, the narrative tightens its grip.
Final Thoughts
Childhood lays the foundation for how people survive in the world as they eventually become adults. The formative years include a wide variety of emotions ranging from joy to downright terror. How one copes and thrives is a work in progress. Factor in the unexpected and one’s path can pivot unexpectedly. Director/Writer Ben Duff creates an unresolved pivot point for his protagonist. Walter Wuz Here is the reckoning.
