Lightyear is a movie in search of Buzz

lightyear movie

Pixar’s Lightyear movie trailers built up anticipation for a film about the “real” Buzz Lightyear. Featuring the deeply resonating music of David Bowie coupled with wondrously beautiful visuals, the hype was understandably palpable. The generation spanning popularity of Toy Story’s toy based Buzz presented a unique opportunity for the filmmakers to exceed lofty expectations. Instead, the creative team played it safe.

Dr. Strange sequel is really Wandavision Part 2

dr strange 2

Dr. Strange has never been a typical Marvel super hero. After all, he is a sorcerer. The rules of magic are not easily defined, nor should they be. When pitted against a non-magic equipped adversary, the supernaturally powered combatant has the advantage. Which is why it makes sense for a Dr. Strange flick to feature the powerful Scarlet Witch. Yet Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had the potential to be so much more.

Spider-Man: No Way Home gets stuck in the web

iron spider

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a bloated mess. As a lifelong fan of the webhead, that reality hit hard. The anticipation for the movie ran feverishly high. From the hinted cameos to the ascendance of Peter Parker from high school geek to young adult, one couldn’t help feeling underwhelmed by the narrative. Perhaps it was an overabundance of riches. Too much of a good thing jam-packed into a two hour timeframe. To be fair, there were exceptionally great moments in the movie. Yet the ambitious whole was not equal to the sum of its parts.

The Matrix Resurrections reveals more in Trailer 2

Matrix Resurrections

The Matrix Resurrections has just dropped its second official trailer. Part of me wishes I had not seen it. But alas, how could one resist another peek into this new addition of Neo’s journey. Adult men tend to become more isolated as they age. Childhood friendships dissipate while creating adult friendships remain elusive. Generally speaking, men don’t make the time to seek out new relationships outside of their significant others. In the United States, current societal norms frown upon predominantly male social gatherings deeming them non-inclusive or toxic masculinity; the reasoning being that men have held advantageous positions in politics, business, and family for countless centuries. Complicating matters further, fatherhood indirectly erodes close friendships. How do we reverse the tide?

Free Guy is the latest Ryan Renolds movie. In fact, in the age of Covid, it’s one of the few recent movie releases only being shown at theaters. Given my kids and I are vaccinated, we opted to take the plunge to return to the in-person experience. We arrived at the cinema with no expectations other than preferring to watch a Ryan Reynolds movie over the other latest film release, Paw Patrol.

The Suicide Squad (2021) – Movie Trailer

suicide squad

The Suicide Squad reflects the creative fringe of the DC Universe. It asks the question “if super villains could team up on missions for the greater good, what would happen?” Granted, these super villains have tiny explosives implanted which will detonate if they stray from the mission. Nonetheless, the assembled motley crew must still manage to work with one another. Therein lies the fun. It’s all about personal conflict management. Director James Gunn is helming the latest iteration of The Suicide Squad. The first movie trailer of Gunn’s version promises a rollicking ride.
