Godzilla vs. Kong : Movie Review

Godzilla vs. Kong
Godzilla vs.Kong is the type of epic battle that guarantees box office success. It represents the pinnacle dream match for monster movie fans. No need for in-depth analysis of the story. In fact, what matters most is a big screen, excellent sound system, and popcorn. In the midst of a global pandemic, this model of mindless entertainment couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

How’s the story?

Rather than go into details about the storyline and risking the possibility of spoilers, let’s just say the plot successfully drives the two combatants to interact often on screen. I would also offer up that the subplot involving the character Madison Russell played by Millie Bobby Brown (best known for Stranger Things) was inconsequential. To be fair, almost the entire human cast serves no purpose other than to facilitate the larger-than-life monster battles. The exception would be the standout performance of Kaylee Hottle who plays the role of Jia, a young deaf girl who holds a deep connection with King Kong and communicates with him via sign language.

How are the special effects?

Regardless if one enjoys monster flicks or not, one will appreciate the seamless and awesome visual grandeur exhibited on screen. I predict industry recognition for the visual effects production team when awards season arrives.

The movie has a PG-13 rating. Can I take my kids?

The movie walks a fine line between typical monster battle violence and outright gore. Perhaps since the combatants are monsters, audiences won’t be quite as impacted as if it were human beings. To be fair, there were a few jarring moments involving King Kong’s choice of post-battle snacks. I would recommend the movie for kids 11 and up already exposed to action films such as Avengers: Infinity War.

Are there any ideal moments for Bathroom Breaks?

As mentioned previously, human beings are secondary in a monster battle movie. You won’t miss much if you opt to take a break when there’s a lengthy human-driven scene. That being said, I’d look to go when Madison Russell drives off in a van or the scene when special craft follow King Kong to Hollow Earth.

Final Thoughts

The global pandemic that has lingered for over a year and has recently shown signs of abating has created a need for entertainment. As of this writing, movie theaters have slowly begun to reopen. Also noteworthy, streaming services such as HBO Max decided to release films simultaneously along side theatrical releases in 2021. The result? Fresh entertainment in what has been a seemingly endless void. Godzilla vs. Kong hits all the right notes for grin-inducing, pulse-pounding mindless fun. There are no expectations for Best Movie awards for this particular entry. But if there was an award for Best Popcorn Flick, I’d bet the house on the big guys taking the gold.

Overall Grade: A-

Recommended for kids ages 10 and up.

Pros: The dynamic duo of Monster Movies brings their A-game to the battle. Escapist movie theater fun at its finest.

Cons: Many of the subplots involving the human characters could have been left on the cutting room floor. It creates unnecessary lulls in an otherwise fast-paced action flick.
