‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Review – Inevitable success

The Super Mario Bros. Movie outplayed the competition worldwide. As of this writing, it’s the highest grossing video game adaptation movie of all time. Being a fan of the franchise since its inception, I truly wanted to love this film. It would have required so little effort. Yet I exited the theater inexplicably indifferent from the experience.

Countless video games and toys have been produced as well as a pretty awful live action movie. Indeed, the love for this history making franchise character continues to endure. Hence, the new upcoming animated film from Nintendo and Illumination based on the world of Super Mario Bros. aptly titled “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

I was curious how the creative production team planned to reignite the excitement for dinosaurs given the familiarity with the genre. Arguably, the thrills and chills have been in decline with each successive Jurassic Park iteration. Casting Chris Pratt in the leading role, fresh off his charismatic performance in Guardians of the Galaxy, certainly helps. But would it be enough?

About a year ago, I read that Marvel Studios was producing a movie titled “Guardians of the Galaxy” which would be based on characters from the comic book series. Admittedly I’d never heard of these Marvel characters before. The movie trailer offered a glimpse of the story yet ultimately left me feeling perplexed. Was it supposed to be a screwball action comedy? After all, the lead character, Peter Quill aka Star Lord, was being played by Chris Pratt, an actor best known for his portrayal of Andy Dwyer on the relatively obscure comedy television series “Parks and Recreation”. Also, what exactly was the deal with the 1970s based music soundtrack? In the time it took me to consume a cool tasty beverage, I concluded a science fiction movie with its roots and music from the 1970s had to be worth a look. Besides, it worked for “Star Wars”, right?
