I walked into the movie theater expecting to be entertained by a new superhero story, Incredibles 2. After all, the hugely successful original movie, The Incredibles, presented a perfect blend of heartfelt storytelling, visually stunning animation, and delightful superhero adventure. Still, 14 years have passed since it was released in November 2004. During that time I was a single man about to be wed to my high school sweetheart. Flash forward to the present, I’m married and a father keenly attuned to family life. What’s the bottom line? Disney’s Incredibles 2 delivers all the innovative thrills of the original while exploring the nuances of modern fatherhood.

I’ve been a Dad for nearly 10 years. My grey hairs and sleep-deprived appearance prove it. Yet in my rare moments of coherence, a smile emerges across my face from cheek to cheek. I’m more than just a father. And I’m thankful to the little humans in our family. You see, although science informs me my wife and I created our children, it was my kids who transformed me into a Dad.

Father’s day is fast approaching. Unlike Mother’s Day which traditionally manifests into a day of pampering and gifts for Moms, Father’s Day usually encompasses a more subdued recognition of Dads. In fact, rather than a dad-centric celebration, Father’s day often entails a family outing such as a day at the park or a visit to the Zoo. As for gifts, Dads can expect to be inundated with inexpensive pre-packaged department store items (think Grooming kits) or perhaps the generic shirt and tie combo set. Quite frankly, fathers would rather have hugs from our children, a good meal, low stress, and some intimate time with our wives. How Fatherhood and Jello are Related
For me, 2006 was the year that changed everything. A nine month odyssey of introspection, fear, and discovery that would shake me to my very core. To state that I was mentally and emotionally unprepared for my upcoming new role in life would be an understatement. I was a mess pure and simple. A wobbling bowl of green jello barely held together by skin and bones. Maybe that’s why Bill Cosby, America’s TV Dad, became a spokesperson for Jello products. A tacit nod to all new Dads who’ve gone through this rite of passage. The path that leads to Father’s Day.
