Star Wars fans literally span the globe in the hundreds of millions. They represent folks in just about every demographic imaginable. So when May the Fourth rolls around on the calendar, it’s more than a big deal, it’s a bonafide science fiction nerd celebration. Collectively, The Force has been strong in our lives at CuteMonster.com for generations. We thought’d it be fun to share a few ideas to celebrate what’s come to be known as Star Wars Day.
In this episode of The CuteMonster Show podcast, I interviewed Ryan Penagos, VP and Executive Director of Marvel’s Digital Media Group. As a comic book fan it’s comforting to know there are like-minded individuals overseeing Marvel’s massive superhero empire. Ryan discussed his own personal journey to join one of the most popular and influential entertainment franchises in the world. He also gave a glimpse of the inner sanctum of Marvel as well as provided insight about two of Marvel’s hottest comic book releases to date and more.
In the past, discussing Captain America comics or any superhero related topic for that matter wasn’t necessarily the coolest thing to do in grammar school. At the time, one would have been ridiculed and mockingly branded a nerd. Revisiting the subject in the present reveals a shocking paradigm shift. Mainstream pop culture and nerd culture have become synonymous. The past 10 years arguably could be classified as the Golden Age of Comic Book Movies. I never imagined my boyhood heroes would so aptly be depicted on the big screen. In fact, the recently released Captain America: Civil War may represent the pinnacle of multi-superhero comic book movies.
Batman has always held a special place in comic book fans’ hearts. He has no superpowers yet may be arguably the greatest superhero ever. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight. To celebrate, DC Entertainment is partnering with thousands of comic book stores nationwide for “Batman Day” on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.
The 2012 New York Comic Con has beckoned the popular culture masses and they responded in droves. In my second year of coverage of the convention, my initial impression of the event was simply “whoa!” It was like an overwhelming palpable wave of energy had swept through the cavernous halls of the venerable Jacob Javits Convention Center. Music was blaring, cosplayers were out in force with intricately detailed costumes. as well as the endless hordes of vendors and exhibitors all working in concert to impart the attendees with an unforgettable experience.
The above illustration was of an imaginary superhero battle I waged as a child. I created the image to be used in conjunction with an article for “Comic Book Literacy”, an important documentary film conveying the idea of how comic books can play an integral role in engaging kids to read.

My Spidey Sense had been tingling all night. Suddenly I leapt backward completing a humanly impossible acrobatic feat while landing hard against the wall. The floor where I last stood had been crushed to rubble. Slightly stunned from the impact, my eyes burned from the dust filled smoke as I attempted to get a glance at my attacker. “Focus Spidey.” I could barely make out his silhouette. “No, it can’t be. He was supposed to be dead.”
